Editor: So, this ink drawing is titled "Puppet in Toilet" by Mark Kostabi, created in 1987. It's stark. The stark black ink makes the image pretty shocking, even cartoonish. What symbolic meanings do you find in this work? Curator: Well, the puppet immediately suggests a loss of control, doesn’t it? To see that figure within a toilet—a potent symbol of both cleansing and waste—creates a visually arresting statement. Think of the cultural baggage the toilet carries; shame, the body, hygiene...Kostabi thrusts our pre-conceived notions into the light. Editor: Shame, that’s a strong reading. Is the starkness connected to that feeling, or is there some other historical aspect to this visual choice? Curator: Precisely! Consider the work in dialogue with graffiti art, which emerged partly as a revolt against the sanitised world. Kostabi merges those worlds, both aesthetically and conceptually. Are we purging the puppet? Or is the puppet purging itself, maybe ridding itself of some imposed identity? Editor: That's interesting, because it also reminds me of certain Dadaist images, and this was made much later. Is Kostabi reflecting on prior trends in art? Curator: The spectre of Dada hangs heavy here, definitely. This seems to embrace a kind of absurd humor while simultaneously delivering a fairly devastating critique of consumerism. Kostabi has us looking in the mirror to examine aspects of culture we take for granted. What parts of our culture do we consider waste, literally and figuratively? Editor: I hadn’t thought about the mirror-effect of the toilet. It gives us pause. Thanks for providing these insightful approaches, that’s an entirely different viewpoint. Curator: And thank you. It's these unexpected echoes across time and cultures which enrich how we understand art’s capacity to provoke.
