It’s currently held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. What strikes you about it? Editor: Well, she looks a little precarious up there! Sort of unbalanced and...vulnerable, even with that classicizing pose. Makes me wonder about the artist's relationship to these ideals. Curator: It's intriguing, isn’t it? The Neo-Classical style often draws upon earlier symbols and visual tropes. Consider how the figure's stance on the object might allude to classical sculptures of Venus, who was often shown emerging from a shell or standing upon a pedestal. Editor: Yes, there's that clear echo. But the lines are so raw, so hesitant compared to the idealized forms you’d see in, say, a finished marble statue. This feels much more like an act of questioning, almost a deconstruction of the feminine ideal. Like he’s still figuring her out. Curator: Precisely!
