Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as “Il Grechetto” for his love of painting animals, created this etching, "Bacchanal before an altar to the gods", between 1640 and 1650. The print depicts a group of figures engaged in a bacchanalian revelry before an altar dedicated to the gods. The scene is set in a wooded grove, creating an atmosphere of both revelry and mystery. The figures are depicted with a degree of realism and naturalism, characteristic of Castiglione's style. The artist's use of light and shadow adds depth and dimension to the composition, enhancing the overall sense of drama. This etching is an excellent example of Castiglione's mastery of the etching technique and his ability to capture the spirit of ancient Roman bacchanals.
