Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione created this etching entitled 'Bacchanal before an altar to the gods' sometime in the 17th century. Castiglione, nicknamed Il Grechetto, lived in the Republic of Genoa, where the influence of different artistic traditions converged. Here we see a scene inspired by ancient Roman festivals honoring Bacchus, the god of wine and revelry. These bacchanals were associated with ecstatic dance, music, and the temporary suspension of social norms, thus challenging established hierarchies. Castiglione was fascinated by light and shadow, which he used to create drama and evoke emotions. His works often depict mythological or pastoral scenes, blending classical and baroque elements. Castiglione’s identity as an artist was shaped by his constant experimentation with printmaking techniques, which allowed him to circulate his artistic visions widely. Through this Bacchanal print we are invited to experience a world where celebration blurs the boundaries between the human and the divine.
