Marc-Luc created "Été 1923, No. 53: Illustration de Marc-Luc" in 1923, and what strikes me is the way he plays with form to create an effect that is graphic, yet also painterly. The illustration has a very strong sense of color, with a limited palette of greens, blues, and reds. The black lines are so bold, really delineating the subject from the background, and yet the illustration retains a sense of depth, with the eye drawn to the characters in the background of the composition. I am sympathetic to Marc-Luc's playfulness with color. I can almost imagine him painting, and working through the different choices. I can imagine him considering how to balance the color fields with line. There's a conversation going on here, between the figures in the foreground, the background, and the buildings. As with much of Marc-Luc’s work, this piece invites us to see the world through a different lens.
