Willi Baumeister made this piece, "Phantom and Yellow Table," with paint, probably oil or acrylic, with what looks like cut and paste elements. The shapes feel like they're constantly being re-arranged. There’s a red rectangle near the left that looks like it might be moving, or has been moved, away from a large black cloud-like area. The layering of colors – the blue, yellow, and red especially – gives the work a real sense of depth and movement, like a collage falling apart. Look at the lower right corner: There are all these rectangular shapes on top of each other. The yellow is applied in thin layers, allowing the colors beneath to peek through, while the larger mass of black feels solid. This contrast creates a playful tension, hinting at both structure and fluidity. I can see hints of Klee, and maybe even a touch of early Miro, a combination that shows how art is basically one big conversation across time and space.
