This is an engraving from 1596, of unknown authorship, representing three warriors from Bantam. The composition is strikingly organized around three main figures contrasted with the more diminutive stature of the background characters. The foregrounded warriors are depicted with a high level of detail in their attire and weaponry. Structurally, the print employs a contrast between the detailed depiction of the figures and the somewhat sparse rendering of the landscape, challenging a classical approach to perspective. The linear quality of the engraving emphasizes form and contour over tonal modulation, creating a stylized effect. The visual codes at play are intriguing, the detailed rendering of the warriors’ equipment may reflect a European fascination with exotic weaponry, while the somewhat flattened perspective destabilizes a singular viewpoint, inviting multiple interpretations. This artwork underscores how cultural encounters are mediated through specific visual languages.
