Clarence Hudson White captured "Drie mensen aan de oever van een rivier" around the turn of the century using the photogravure technique. The print immerses us in a hazy waterscape dominated by soft, muted tones. The composition is structured by the river as a central, receding element, flanked by indistinct forms of trees and buildings. White employs a shallow depth of field, blurring the details and emphasizing the tonal gradations which evoke a sense of quietude and reflection. The figures on the riverbank are secondary to the atmospheric conditions. White’s artistic approach here is pictorialist; he manipulates the photographic medium to mimic painting. The softness and lack of sharp detail contribute to a romantic, almost dreamlike quality, reminiscent of impressionist landscapes. Pictorialism sought to elevate photography to the status of fine art. In doing so, it challenged conventional photographic practices by focusing on aesthetics and emotional expression rather than mere documentation. The composition, the soft focus, and the muted tones work together to create a scene that transcends realism, inviting us to contemplate the aesthetic and emotional potential inherent in the photographic medium.
