Florence Choate made this drawing of a Butter Stamp with graphite on paper at an unknown date. It's fascinating how Choate uses simple lines to convey so much about form and texture. The circular stamp is rendered with careful precision, each detail of its carved surface meticulously captured. It's easy to imagine Choate using a variety of pencils to create different qualities of line, to give the circular head its 3D depth. The radiating pattern feels both decorative and functional, like a miniature sun ready to imprint its mark on a pat of butter. Each petal and star-like shape is clearly defined, inviting us to trace its outline with our eyes. I am reminded of some of Agnes Martin's more geometric drawings, or the early pattern and decoration movement. There is a similar interest in repetition, in the visual poetry of everyday objects. Ultimately, the drawing speaks to the beauty that can be found in simple, handcrafted tools.
