George Hendrik Breitner made this sketch of buildings, possibly in the Rustenburgerstraat in Amsterdam, with graphite on paper. It's not really about the final product, but the process, the getting-it-down-quick feeling. You can tell he wasn't precious about it. I love how the lines are so immediate and raw. You can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the paper, trying to capture the essence of the buildings. It's not precise or polished, but that's what makes it so appealing. The texture of the paper shows through, adding another layer of depth to the piece. The way he scratched in those details, like the windows and rooftops, it's like he's inviting us to imagine the rest. It reminds me a bit of Philip Guston's late drawings, that same sense of urgency and directness, like the artist is just trying to get something out of their head and onto the page. Art is about that conversation, you know, artists talking to each other across time. It's more questions than answers.
