Nieves Mingueza’s ‘The Waiting Room’ is a collage that layers interior and exterior spaces in black and white. Mingueza, born in 1971, is working in a moment defined by both globalization and displacement. The contrast of the sky, open and boundless, with the claustrophobic, patterned walls of a room suggests the experience of being caught between worlds. Note the bed, a symbol of rest and intimacy, is disrupted by its strange surroundings and the peeling wallpaper. This tension evokes a sense of unease and suspension, like being in transit. Mingueza's juxtaposition asks us to consider how we create spaces of belonging in the face of transience. As viewers, we're invited to reflect on the emotional weight of in-between spaces. The act of waiting becomes a meditation on the search for stability and home in an ever-changing world.
