This Panel was made by an anonymous artist, and it lives at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Look at the repeated motifs, like undulating, psychedelic fans, made using red, pink, green, and blue. I imagine the act of creation involved some kind of transfer method; almost like a printmaking process, allowing for these rhythmic, recurring patterns. I wonder what the artist was thinking as they laid down each form. What kind of conversation was the artist having with the material? Were they exploring the possibilities of color relationships, or perhaps investigating pattern and repetition? Maybe they were simply enjoying the process of making marks and seeing what emerged. This piece is a reminder that artists are in constant dialogue with each other. An exchange of ideas across time, each inspiring the other's creativity.
