This Colcha, by an anonymous artist, is a riot of colour, even though it's contained within stripes and geometric forms. It’s like they're setting up a kind of system, and then breaking it apart at the same time. That’s what good art is about for me, you know? I like the way the reds are mixed in with pastel shades, these unexpected colour combinations create this rhythm that is visually interesting. I’m drawn to the marks. There are small dashes and spots filling the background with a lighter tone, which creates a loose and unregimented impression. I love the way they are not trying to be too perfect. To me, this is where the feeling comes from in this piece, the human touch. It reminds me a little of the work of Ree Morton, another artist who wasn’t afraid to be playful, mixing high and low art forms, and using colour to express feeling. Art should be about embracing that ambiguity, allowing for multiple ways of seeing and feeling.
