Jan Saenredam created this engraving, titled ‘Mådehold’ – or ‘Temperance’ in English – at the turn of the 17th century. It portrays a female allegorical figure, who gently pours liquid from a ewer into a glass. Saenredam was working during the Dutch Golden Age, a period when the Netherlands experienced significant cultural and economic growth, coupled with the rise of humanism. Here, classical and biblical themes merged with humanist values, stressing the importance of reason, balance, and moderation. The figure of Temperance embodies ideals of self-control and ethical conduct. Yet, her delicate posture and flowing garments also convey a sense of sensuality. The tension between restraint and desire is palpable, reflecting the complexities of human nature. With this engraving Saenredam invites us to consider how we, too, might find harmony between our conflicting desires and the virtues we aspire to embody.
