Vilhelm Bissen modeled this sculpture of a bull and buffalo in combat, using clay. The rough texture of the clay is evident across the surface, with visible marks left by the artist’s hands and tools. These textures are important. Bissen wasn't trying to fool you into thinking this was actual bronze or marble. Instead, you see the immediacy and energy of his process. Clay is a humble material, directly linked to the earth, easily shaped but also fragile until fired. The cracks you see in the base are a testament to this inherent instability. Bissen was working within a well-established sculptural tradition, but he also drew upon a broader understanding of material and process. While the subject matter might suggest high art, the medium speaks to the vital role of craft. Considering these elements, we can understand the sculpture not just as a representation of animal conflict, but as an exploration of material potential.
