This textile, known as a “wrapper,” was made by an anonymous artist, and is comprised of strips of woven cotton. Look closely, and you can see how the inherent qualities of the cotton—its absorbency for dye, its flexible yet durable structure, and its capacity to be woven—have been exploited to create a rich visual texture. The wrapper is a study in contrasts: solid bands of color against intricate geometric patterns; vertical stripes playing against horizontal ones. This juxtaposition required time, labor and skill. These textiles are deeply entwined with social significance. The making of these strips of woven cotton is more than just a craft; it’s a cultural act, imbued with history and meaning. Textiles like this one served as markers of identity, status, and belonging within communities. They challenge our assumptions about the boundaries between art, craft, and everyday life.
