Here we see Jurriaan Andriessen’s design for a chimney wall, made with pen, brush, and gray and blue ink. Andriessen lived during a time of shifting social structures, with growing tensions between the aristocratic elite and the rising merchant class. This work reflects the lifestyle of the wealthy, revealing a desire for refined domestic spaces. The design suggests a longing for an idealized version of nature, carefully curated and framed within the confines of the home, as opposed to a rugged landscape. Consider the emotional experience of inhabiting such a space. The subdued colors and serene landscapes create a sense of calm, but also detachment. The people in the boat on the left panel, seem contained within the scene, separate from the viewer's space. Andriessen’s design reflects the complex interplay between nature, society, and the individual's place within it. It is a visual representation of the human desire to shape our environment and, in turn, be shaped by it.
