This self-portrait was made by William Rothenstein using graphite on paper. The choice of simple materials focuses our attention on the artist's gaze. The marks are delicate and precise, slowly and deliberately building up the image of the artist. The hand that holds the paper is as important as the face that looks out at us. Pencil on paper, a traditional and accessible medium, democratizes art in some sense. It doesn’t require access to complicated equipment, expensive materials, or studio space. It speaks of directness and, in this case, an introspective nature. However, we must also remember that Rothenstein was a celebrated artist and teacher. The simplicity of the materials is therefore a conscious choice. It reminds us of the importance of considering the artist's skill and intention when interpreting their work. We realize that what appears simple is not always so.
