Editor: This is Nan Goldin's photograph, "Vivienne in the green dress, NYC." The composition feels very considered, almost staged, despite the candid nature of Goldin's work. What do you see in the way the artist uses color and space? Curator: The interplay of color is quite striking. Note the contrast between the cool teal wall and the vibrant green of Vivienne's dress. The composition is structured by the framing of the doorway and window, drawing the eye around the figure. Do you find that this structured composition contributes to its impact? Editor: I think so, the lines are very strong. I also think it gives the photograph a sense of depth despite being a portrait. Thank you! Curator: Indeed. Goldin expertly uses formal elements to create a narrative within a single frame. It's an insightful study in composition and color.

Vivienne Dick is an Irish film-maker. She and Goldin met in New York in the 1980s and have been friends ever since. The two artists have collaborated on a number of projects. Dick’s films were a big influence on Goldin, particularly in the choice of music to accompany the slideshow. Gallery label, April 2019
