Gezicht op Reeuwijk met rechts de Sint-Petrus en Pauluskerk c. 1905 - 1907
Dimensions height 81 mm, width 110 mm
This photograph of Reeuwijk with the Sint-Petrus en Pauluskerk to the right, was taken by Folkert Idzes de Jong sometime between 1877 and 1929. I like to imagine De Jong setting up his camera, carefully composing the shot, and waiting for the right light. I bet he was thinking about how to capture the essence of this place, this small village with its towering church. The sepia tones give the image a timeless quality, but it also makes me think about the limitations of the medium at the time. The way the light reflects off the water, creating these soft, blurry reflections, it's almost like an impressionist painting. Photography and painting, they are just different ways of seeing, thinking, and experiencing the world, each with its own unique strengths and limitations. It’s beautiful to see that conversation happening across time.
