Folkert Idzes de Jong made this image of Reeuwijk and its church with photography at some point in his life, though we don’t know exactly when. The monochromatic palette is interesting. It reminds us that even with limited means, there's still so much to see. The texture in this picture is remarkable, especially the way the light plays on the water. Look at how the reflections of the buildings and the church create this ghostly double image. It’s like the village is breathing, its soul mirrored in the water. For me, there’s a real connection to be made with the Dutch Masters who painted these landscapes. There's a dialogue happening across time, a shared fascination with light, land and reflection. Art's just a big conversation, isn't it? And like any good conversation, it’s not about having all the answers, but about asking the right questions.
