Lilies with Hydrangea and Hollyhocks 1801

Sakai Hōitsu created "Lilies with Hydrangea and Hollyhocks" with ink and color on silk. The diptych presents two distinct yet harmonious scenes: the panel on the left explodes with vibrant reds and whites of the hollyhocks, the dense foliage creating a lively vertical rhythm. On the right, pale lilies and hydrangeas are rendered with muted tones, offering a serene contrast. Hōitsu, deeply rooted in the Rinpa school, here uses asymmetry and simplified forms, drawing viewers into a contemplative space. The negative space surrounding the floral arrangements is just as crucial, allowing each element to breathe.
