Curatorial notes
This is a portrait of a man with a mustache, thought to be Georg Münch, made by Emile Pricam. The mustache, a striking feature, is a symbol of virility, status, and cultural identity that has varied across time. From the ancient Assyrian kings, whose elaborate beards signified power and wisdom, to the clean-shaven faces of classical antiquity, facial hair carries a potent message. In 19th-century Europe, the mustache became fashionable among the military and the aristocracy. As an emblem of masculinity, the mustache can be seen in ancient Roman sculptures and Renaissance paintings, albeit styled differently. It is a recurring motif, evolving and adapting to each era's ideals, yet retaining its core association with masculine authority. The image evokes a sense of nostalgia. These symbols are deeply embedded in our collective memory and subconscious, prompting us to reflect on changing ideals of masculinity.
