This porcelain cup and saucer were created by the Rue Thiroux: Queen's Factory. The eye is immediately drawn to the diamond pattern, an all-over design which covers both pieces and creates a dynamic visual rhythm. This use of a repetitive pattern destabilizes the traditional hierarchy where some parts of a design are dominant while others are secondary. Applying semiotic analysis, each diamond can be seen as a sign, and together they form a grid that hints at broader cultural codes. The black and white contrast is stark and without nuance, and the simple geometric shapes present a world that is ordered and controlled. There is a tension, however, in the subtle curvature of the cup and saucer, which softens the rigid geometry, offering an alternative reading of harmony. The success of this work lies in the interplay between the geometric pattern and the rounded forms, inviting us to appreciate the balance of structure and fluidity. This ongoing dialogue ensures that the artwork continues to resonate with multiple layers of interpretation.
