Editor: This untitled print by Eduardo Paolozzi presents rows of figures and faces in pink and black. I'm struck by the combination of what appear to be ritualistic images alongside a picture of a young girl and an advertisement. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Well, I'm drawn to consider how Paolozzi uses found imagery and mass media in conjunction with older, more ritualistic images to discuss contemporary culture. The ad, the girl, juxtaposed with the masks, points to a clash between commercialism and cultural traditions. To what extent do you feel this clash is deliberate? Editor: I see what you mean; it's almost as though Paolozzi is questioning the authenticity of culture in an age of consumerism. This juxtaposition makes me view media differently. Curator: Exactly! It makes us consider the public role of art and the politics inherent in imagery. A powerful statement about the commodification of culture.
