Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this vase design with pen and brush in ink. The spontaneous brushstrokes feel like you're watching an idea take shape, each stroke a decision, a little dance. Look at the way the ink pools and thins, creating depth with just one color. The creatures on either side of the vase, are they dragons? Lions? They’re mirrored, but not perfectly, giving them a lively, almost conversational feel. The overall texture is smooth but lively. You can almost feel the drag of the brush across the paper. That bold, almost clumsy stroke outlining the vase’s form, it doesn’t try to hide its imperfections. It's kind of punk, in a way. It reminds me of some of Philip Guston's more cartoonish line work. It's like Cachet is saying, "Here it is, process and all." And maybe that’s the point – art isn't about perfection, but about the messy, beautiful act of making.
