Side chair (one of a pair) 1770 - 1785

This side chair was made by Jean-Baptiste III Lelarge in the late 18th century. The frame is carved and gilded wood, while the seat and back are covered in delicate blue fabric. The chair’s elegant form is shaped by the skills of the ébéniste, or cabinetmaker, who would have been highly trained in woodworking techniques. Look closely at the frame, and you’ll see intricate carved details, likely achieved using specialized chisels and gouges. Gilding, or the application of gold leaf, added a final layer of luxury, transforming the wooden structure into something precious. And of course, the textile speaks to the weaver’s art, now faded with age but still a testimony to expert craftsmanship. This chair represents a convergence of artistic practices.
