Regina Henderer made this watercolor of a lancet and its case. The palette is restrained, almost muted, giving the whole scene a delicate, historical feel. It speaks to the process of observing closely, a slow meditation with brush in hand. Look closely at the interior of the case. The pigment is applied in thin, washy layers, allowing the texture of the paper to peek through. This transparency creates depth, a sense of receding space within the small box. Notice the way Henderer captures the light reflecting off the metallic parts of the lancet. There's a gentle shimmer, achieved with careful touches of white. The way the sharp edges are rendered with such softness is compelling. This drawing reminds me of the still lifes of Giorgio Morandi, who also found endless inspiration in humble, everyday objects. Both artists teach us to see the world anew, to find beauty in the ordinary. Art is an ongoing conversation, and Henderer's voice, though quiet, is one worth listening to.
