This is a wallpaper border design by Charles Garjian. Looking at the way the colors are laid down, you can really see the hand of the artist in the process. The paper is unadorned except for this border that runs across the top third, a horizontal band of blue and black and white and gold. A field of cornflower blue is broken up by sharp black triangles. Looking closer, each blue section holds a stylized flower in white and gold. The paint application is matte and opaque and has a real density. The design is precise but imperfect, as if Garjian was trying to reconcile free expression with the demands of industrial design. I’m reminded of the work of Hilma af Klint, another artist who was negotiating this divide, trying to bring something ineffable to the surface through abstraction. Ultimately, this piece feels like a study in contrasts and a reminder that art is always a conversation. It embraces complexity and welcomes many interpretations.
