Albrecht Dürer created this woodcut of Saint John around 1496-97, depicting a key scene from the Book of Revelation. Here, Saint John consumes the prophetic text, a symbolic act of assimilating divine knowledge, represented by the radiant, haloed figure above. The act of "eating the book" has ancient roots. We see similar motifs in Egyptian iconography, where pharaohs consume symbols of power to internalize their authority. This theme reappears in medieval allegories, where knowledge is literally ingested as a path to enlightenment. Over time, this symbol has come to represent a deep, often unsettling, immersion into transformative knowledge. The image of consumption evokes a powerful psychological response, reflecting our primal connection between knowledge and nourishment. Dürer taps into our collective memory, where the act of consuming is both a source of life and a potential harbinger of transformation, engaging us on a subconscious level with the profound, often unsettling, nature of divine revelation. As the snake eats its own tail, so too does the sacred book cycle through the ages.
