This silver medal, celebrating Friedrich Hagedorn's sixtieth civic anniversary, was crafted by Loos in 1844. The cool sheen of the metal, precisely struck into a circular form, immediately captures the eye. Looking closer, the coin’s structure reveals two distinct sides. One presents a high-relief profile of Hagedorn, encircled by text, a formal tribute to his person. The other side showcases a wreath of oak leaves framing commemorative text, interspersed with heraldic shields, perhaps representing different aspects of his life or affiliations. The choice of oak leaves is significant, symbolizing endurance and honor, qualities associated with Hagedorn's long service. The coin's circular shape promotes equality; the images on each side do not have hierarchy. The medal challenges the standard notion of representation by combining textual and iconic elements, it asks us to reflect on how societies commemorate individuals and events, using both image and word.
