This Whiskey Bottle was drawn with watercolor, in the style of outsider art. I love that Gerald Scalise took something so ubiquitous and rendered it with such care. The symmetry, the shades of pale green, the slight imperfections and the subtle details—it’s clear he spent some time with this bottle, turning it around in his hands and in his mind, getting to know its essence, before deciding to paint it. What do you think he was thinking about? I can imagine Scalise working slowly, methodically, trying to capture the bottle’s form and texture with delicate washes of watercolor. The thinness of the paint allows the paper to breathe, creating a kind of quiet hum. It's not just a bottle, right? It's about memory, place, and maybe even a bit of longing. Painters are always in conversation with each other, across time and space. They inspire, borrow, and transform. Maybe someone will see this bottle, and it’ll spark something new in them. I hope so.
