This is Johan Thomas Lundbye’s travel journal, made sometime in the 1800s. Lundbye, who died at just 29, was a painter and graphic artist, and one of the most important figures in Danish Golden Age art. As we turn the pages, we become intimate with the artist and his time, and this little book gives us an insight into how much travel has changed. These small notes of expenses – how much he spent on a tip for Nettine, his stay in Interlachen, and other costs - speak volumes. Lundbye’s neat handwriting and the everyday nature of his notes create a sense of closeness. The pages read “My only consolation,” and the small handwriting gives a sense of intimacy and immediacy. We can feel Lundbye’s presence, experiencing the journey alongside him, as he observes and records his impressions. It's a deeply personal glimpse into a life lived almost two centuries ago.
