John Kacere created this painting using traditional techniques of oil on canvas. But there's nothing particularly traditional about the subject. Kacere dedicated his practice to close-up depictions of the female torso. The tight crop magnifies the intimate details of the body, lingerie, and fabric. Look closely at the rendering of the lace, garter belt, and stockings, which are all mass-produced objects of desire. The time-consuming labor of painting is in stark contrast to the ready-made materials depicted. Kacere’s meticulous realism blurs the lines between painting and photography, while challenging conventional notions of taste, beauty, and sexuality. By elevating these everyday materials to the realm of fine art, Kacere prompts us to reconsider the relationship between production, consumption, and representation.
