This is an anonymous guild token made of metal for the free master Samuel Schetse in 1649. Guilds played a vital role in the social and economic structure of the Dutch Republic. They were associations of craftsmen or merchants that controlled the production and distribution of goods and services in a particular trade. This token commemorates Samuel Schetse becoming a free master of the smiths guild. The image creates meaning through its visual codes. On one side, we see the tools of the blacksmith’s trade. Above, a crown suggests the power and authority of the guild. On the reverse, an inscription denotes the date when Samuel Schetse achieved the status of free master: September 9, 1649. Guilds like this one upheld standards of quality and protected the interests of their members. At the same time, they could be exclusionary, limiting access to training and resources. Historians consult guild records, account books, and inventories to understand these complex dynamics.
