This is Einar Heiberg's Baby Buggy. It's hard to know when it was made, but I imagine it was slowly and deliberately built up, one thin wash of color after another. I can almost feel Heiberg’s concentration. What was he thinking as he painted this? Was he remembering a particular baby buggy, or just the idea of one? The colors are muted and subdued, like a memory fading over time. I like how the buggy is carefully outlined and the wheels look solid and dependable. Yet, the umbrella seems almost fluffy, like the memory of softness. It’s funny how the shadow under the buggy makes it float a little. It's kind of like he's saying, "This is a real thing, but also, it's not." You know, painting is like that – an ongoing conversation between what's real and what's not.
