Edvard Weie made this figure study for the Langelinie painting, using pencil on paper. It's a tiny little thing. Look at the way Weie uses short, hatching marks to build up the form. There's a real sense of process here, of the artist thinking through the shapes as he draws. It's all about the gesture, the movement of the hand across the page. You can almost feel the energy of the artist as he works. And then there's that single blue dot that stands in for the figure’s eye. The eye really drags us in. I’m reminded a little of some quick sketches by Manet. It suggests how art is just a never-ending conversation across time. Weie’s study isn't about perfect representation, it's about capturing a feeling, an impression. That’s what makes it so alive.
