USHERS 2020

Consider its role – it's not simply a place of worship, but a hub for community, political organizing, and social change. Editor: I see that. Curator: These ushers, often women, hold a unique position within that structure. What does the composition—the robes, the Bibles, their gestures—suggest about their power, and the church’s social standing? It reflects an idea about community and leadership, don’t you agree? Editor: Absolutely, there’s a strength conveyed. The Bibles are prominent, the robes almost uniform-like, signifying unity. Do you think this piece aims to subvert or uphold that established power dynamic? Curator: Holmes seems to engage with both. The bold color and loose brushwork give a contemporary, almost rebellious energy, challenging traditional, perhaps static, portrayals of religious figures. But at the same time, by centering Black figures in such a prominent way, the work reaffirms their importance. Editor: It's fascinating how a single piece can hold such diverse ideas!
