Pavel Tchelitchew made this Sheet of Studies of Standing Male Nudes with graphite on paper. The artist’s hand feels right there on the page, doesn't it? Like he's thinking through the figures in real-time. Look how the weight of the graphite varies; sometimes it’s a whisper, other times a bold declaration. There’s a vulnerability in leaving the process so visible. There's one nude, standing with his back to us. The smudging around his shoulders - it’s like Tchelitchew is searching for the exact curve of the muscle, unsure, then sure again. It’s about being present in the act of seeing and drawing and letting that show. It reminds me of some of Rodin's drawings. Raw, immediate, unfinished. It's like glimpsing the artist's thought process. Art isn't about answers; it’s about questions.
