Gilich Kilian Proger created this print, “Bladranken die opstijgen uit een pot met oren,” which translates to, “Leaf tendrils rising from a pot with ears,” using etching techniques. Prints like this one, were often part of larger series, widely circulated and meant to be utilized as patterns or models for artisans working in various media, from metalwork to textiles. We are looking at an ornamental design, full of idealized motifs with images of cherubs and leafy tendrils. The image speaks to the period’s fascination with classical forms, yet it transforms these forms into something new through its intricate details. This reflects a broader societal trend, as artists and designers sought to reconcile the grandeur of the past with the burgeoning innovations of their time. Consider the playful cherubs, classically rendered, that are also somewhat queer.
