Albert Huie painted this scene of Houses on Stilts with Fishermen sometime in the 20th century. Here, we see dwellings raised above the water, connected by a precarious-looking pier, their stilts mirrored in the calm water. These structures echo ancient architectural solutions found across cultures, from the pile dwellings of Neolithic Switzerland to the stilt houses of Southeast Asia. Throughout history, raising living spaces above the ground or water served to protect inhabitants from floods, pests, and even enemies. But it also symbolizes a reaching towards the sky, a desire to be closer to the heavens, mirroring humanity's age-old quest for higher ground. In the juxtaposition of the solid, rooted land and the fluid, ever-changing sea, we see a reflection of our own internal conflicts. The fishermen, caught between these two worlds, embody the timeless human struggle to find balance in life. This balance can only be found by building upon the foundations of the past to navigate the present.
