Warren Rohrer made this Untitled diptych, date unknown, likely using paint on two panels. The colour palette here is minimal, dominated by shades of grey. It's a tonal exercise, perhaps, but also a testament to how even subtle shifts in colour and tone can create depth and mood. Looking closely, you see the paint isn’t applied smoothly. There’s a texture, an almost granular quality to the surface. The lower register is defined by soft horizontal band populated with small red markings. These seem to define the parameters of the work and anchor the more ephemeral qualities of the upper sections. Think of Agnes Martin, with her quiet grids and subtle surfaces. Like Martin, Rohrer invites us to slow down, to really see the nuances of colour and texture, and to find the sublime in the seemingly simple. These panels encourage a meditative, contemplative state – a space for quiet reflection.
