This sweetmeat basket was crafted by Burrage Davenport, and is an example of silversmithing at its finest. The material, silver, has a long history as a precious metal, and signified wealth and status. Look closely, and you’ll see the intricate woven design of the basket. This was created by drawing silver into thin wires, then carefully interlacing them – a labor-intensive process demanding great skill. The handle, too, is twisted from multiple strands, adding to the basket's delicacy and refinement. This level of detail speaks to a highly specialized workshop, where artisans like Davenport could dedicate themselves to mastering the techniques of metalworking. Sweetmeats, or candied fruits, were luxury items in the 18th century, and the basket would have been a showpiece on a wealthy table. This object beautifully illustrates the interplay of materials, making, and social context. It’s not just a container; it's a statement about the value placed on both the contents and the craftsmanship itself.
