This study of lilies was created by Antoon Derkinderen, using brown ink on paper. You can see how the character of the ink, its viscosity and tone, lends itself to the delicate rendering of the flower petals. The choice of ink as a medium is significant here. Unlike pencil or charcoal, ink is difficult to erase, demanding a level of commitment from the artist. This sense of assuredness is palpable in the bold, fluid lines that define the lilies. The artist’s hand, guided by a keen eye and deep understanding of botanical form, is evident in every stroke. Derkinderen was working in a time of great social change. While this drawing may seem like a simple study of nature, it is also a testament to the enduring power of observation and skill. It invites us to consider the labor involved in creating art, and the ways in which artists like Derkinderen used traditional materials to capture the beauty of the world around them. It’s a wonderful challenge to any distinction between fine art and craft.
