Editor: This striking black and white image by Paul Coldwell from the Tate collection features rows of dark suits. They seem almost ghostly and uniform. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It feels almost like a memorial, doesn't it? The serried ranks of suits, each identical, yet each representing a life, a person. It evokes a sense of loss, of uniformity erasing individuality. Perhaps Coldwell is exploring the anonymity of modern life, or even more profoundly, reflecting on those lost to conflict or circumstance. What do you make of the texture? Editor: I think the texture adds to that sense of unease, like static or disruption. It makes them feel less like actual suits, and more like shadows. Thanks, I hadn't thought of it that way. Curator: Shadows indeed, prompting us to consider what remains when the person is gone. A powerful image, wouldn't you agree?
