Carl Moll painted this park scene with oils at an unknown date. You can see how the work is put together in layers of thick marks, like a mosaic of strokes. The ochre-colored path dominates the foreground, grounding the composition. The way he drags the paint gives it a textured feeling, as if you could almost feel the grit under your feet. Then, as your eye travels into the distance you are met with these jewel-like dabs of emerald and gold, those greens and yellows are laid on with the side of the brush, building up a canopy overhead. There’s something about the way Moll builds the foliage from similar yet different daubs of paint that makes me think of the pointillist landscapes of Seurat. It feels like Moll and Seurat are working through similar questions about vision and the stuff that paint can do. Painting is a conversation that never ends.
