Carl Moll made this painting of a park in Jevisovice with oil on canvas, although when is unclear. You can see, the park path emerges with assertive brushstrokes of brown. I can imagine Moll working on this outside, trying to capture the light as it flickers through the trees. The greens are really interesting here, aren’t they? See how they’re built up with these short, choppy strokes? It’s like he’s trying to grab the essence of the leaves. I wonder if he was thinking about the French Impressionists. You can see it in the way he’s trying to capture a fleeting moment. It reminds me of some of my own frustrations in the studio, trying to pin down something that’s always shifting. Anyway, Moll made this, and then someone else saw it, and now here we are, thinking about it together. It's like a game of telephone across time. Isn’t art neat?
