Editor: We’re looking at “Visit to an Oil Field in Purissima Hills, USA,” a photograph, possibly from 1908, by Geldolph Adriaan Kessler. The monochromatic palette and industrial scene give it a rather bleak feel, almost prophetic in a way. What do you make of this scene? Curator: The photograph is seemingly straightforward—a visit to an oil field. However, it subtly speaks volumes about early 20th-century capitalism and the exploitation of natural resources. Kessler documents not just a visit, but the burgeoning oil industry's impact on the American landscape and social structure. Who do you think these people in the shot are? Are they workers, investors, or merely spectators? Editor: Possibly investors. Their clothes seem quite elegant. What about the placement of the pipes themselves? They're looming, almost ominous. Curator: Exactly. Their prominence suggests not only the scale of the operation, but also the almost aggressive dominance of industry over nature. Kessler invites us to consider the ethics of resource extraction and its consequences. He doesn't take sides, but subtly implicates everyone in the scene, even us as viewers. Can we really separate our lives from this early scene of oil exploitation? Editor: It is definitely hard to separate from it. Seeing the picture really brought the scope of the industry into perspective. It's older than I would have guessed. Curator: Kessler's photograph transcends a mere industrial landscape. It’s a poignant reminder of our intricate, and often fraught, relationship with the earth. And it continues to inform conversations around sustainability, environmental justice, and corporate responsibility.

In 1908 Kessler accompanied the director of Koninklijke Olie (Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, later Shell), Henri Deterding, as secretary on a world tour. He travelled to Canada and the United States via the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, China, and Japan. Dolph’s photo album contains pictures of an oil field in California, as well as San Francisco’s town hall which had collapsed during an earthquake.
