Robert Frank made this photographic contact sheet, "Ames Farm--Jay, New York IV," using black and white film. What strikes me is the sheer number of images. It’s like he’s trying to capture every angle, every possibility. You get a real sense of his process, the way he’s working through an idea. I am drawn to the red marker scrawled across the fourth row. It's so simple, yet it suddenly transforms the sheet from a technical document into something more personal, something touched by hand. It’s like seeing the artist's thought process laid bare, a direct connection to their decision-making. Seeing this makes me think of Garry Winogrand, another photographer who shot thousands of rolls of film. This piece reminds us that art isn't just about the perfect, finished product, it's about the journey of exploration and experimentation. It's about embracing the messiness and uncertainty of the creative process.
