L’Art Celeste 1894

Odilon Redon created "L’Art Celeste," or "Celestial Art," using lithography. In this print, we see a winged figure playing a stringed instrument alongside a profile of a contemplative, unearthly figure. The angel motif, a visual messenger of the divine, echoes across time. We see this same motif throughout antiquity and the Renaissance in numerous forms, from the gods of Olympus to Christian iconography. Here, however, Redon presents the angel not as a symbol of religious authority, but as a conduit for the power of artistic inspiration, adrift in a dreamlike state.
