Untitled (children waiting in line to buy candy at movie theater) c. 1950
Dimensions image: 5.7 x 5.7 cm (2 1/4 x 2 1/4 in.)
Curator: Jack Gould's small, untitled photograph captures children buying candy at a movie theatre. What strikes me is the stark contrast between the uniformed vendor and the children. What do you make of this scene? Editor: I'm fascinated by the way the image highlights the transaction. It's almost as if the children are workers themselves, purchasing a brief escape after toiling away at work or school. Do you think the artist is commenting on child labor? Curator: Perhaps. The availability of cheap candy relies on a whole chain of production. This photo could be a subtle critique of consumption habits and the labor involved, even if unintentional. What labor and materials go into movie-going? Editor: I hadn't considered that! Thinking about the film production, the theater staff, even the materials of the building itself… it's a lot more than just popcorn and a movie. Curator: Exactly. Editor: Thanks, I'll never look at a movie the same way.
