"IJdele man wil geprezen worden door het volk", or "A vain man wants to be praised by the people," was created by Wierix around the turn of the 17th century. As an engraver living in the Habsburg Netherlands during the religious and political turmoil of the Reformation, Wierix's art often reflected the moral and religious issues of his time. This engraving offers a critical view of vanity and the human desire for praise, set against a backdrop of religious and social commentary. The central figure, the vain man, stands in elaborate attire, embodying arrogance, while those around him represent various aspects of society, from the religious to the impoverished. Wierix uses the scene to explore how the quest for admiration corrupts both the individual and the community. The detailed allegorical scene draws on biblical themes. The artist critiques the superficiality of public recognition versus genuine virtue. Wierix asks us to reflect on the value of integrity and humility in a world often swayed by appearances.
