Curatorial notes
This is an albumen print portrait, attributed to Erwin Hanfstaengl, of a woman identified as Amédée Duparc. Likely taken in the late 19th century, a period when photography was becoming increasingly accessible, especially to the middle classes. Here, Duparc is captured in a formal pose, her dress and demeanor speaking to her social standing. Yet, I wonder, what does it mean to be an unknown woman, merely identified as someone’s aunt? What stories might be embedded within this image? Perhaps, in this photograph, we see more than just a portrait, but a reflection on the role of women of that era: their identities often overshadowed by their relationships to men, their stories untold, their individual existences reduced to familial connections. This image invites us to consider the countless women whose lives shaped history, even when their names and stories have been lost or obscured.
